Watching Star Wars, what’s the correct order?

Chances are if you’re a Star Wars fan you’ve probably been asked by someone which order they should watch the movies if they’ve never seen them. This seems to be a pretty big debate among the community. Recently I posted a poll on Twitter to see what people think and the results are in.

Production and chronological order tied with machete coming in second and no votes for The Godfather order. I’ve always been a fan of chronological order myself but let’s go over the order for each so you can decide for yourself.

Production Order

If you decide to watch the movies in production order this means you will be watching them in the order in which they were made. This is considered the purist way. You will be watching it the way a good majority of fans have. Many swear this is the only way to watch but keep in mind things will jump around a bit if you watch it in this order. I will go ahead and list each order in case you’re not familiar. I’ve also included the shows and “other” movies not apart of the Skywalker saga.

• Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

• Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

• Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)

• Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)

• Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)

• Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

• Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020)

• Star Wars Rebels (2014-2018)

• Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

• Rogue One (2016)

• Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)

• Star Wars: Resistance (2018-2020)

• Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

• Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

• The Mandalorian (2019-present)

Chronological Order

As I stated earlier this is the order I advise anyone who asks to watch. When watching this way you get to live the story along with the characters. You get to see how it all started and follow it all the way to how it ends. The downside to this order for many is “the big reveal” is spoiled. Personally, I wouldn’t have minded having it spoiled had I not seen the original trilogy first but for some, it would be a pretty big deal.

• Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)

• Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)

• Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008-2020)

• Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

• Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

• Star Wars Rebels (2014-2018)

• Rogue One (2016)

• Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

• Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back  (1980)

• Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)

• The Mandalorian (2019-present)

• Star Wars: Resistance (2018-2020)

• Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

• Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)

• Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

Machete Order

This is the order I hear recommended the most so I was actually surprised it didn’t get many votes. If you’re new to the Star Wars fandom you may have yet to hear how many people actually hate The Phantom Menace (Episode 1) so much so they’d rather pretend it didn’t exist. That’s where the machete order comes in.

• Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)

• Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

• Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002)

• Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

• Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (1983)

• pisode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)

• Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (2017)

• Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

If you’re curious about The Godfather order that no one voted for, it’s The Machete order with The Phantom Menace included.

Regardless of what anyone tells you there really isn’t a right or wrong answer when it comes to watching Star Wars. I think you will enjoy watching no matter what order you see it in. You will meet all kinds of fans anywhere from those who only like the original trilogy all the way to those of us who basically love anything just because it’s Star Wars. Whichever order you decide, I just hope you love it as much as the rest of us.

  1. I watched Star Wars when it first came out and then the next two when they came. Life happened and I was unable to watch the ones that followed and honestly was not really interested in going back in time with these movies. I must admit that you have made me curious so I will watch them in the chronological. That really makes sense anyway to learn how it all started.
Thank you for the information and your insight on the movies. Your creative writing has made me interested enough to watch the Mondolorian series as well. Thank you. Looking forward to more of your blogs.
